About Us: The physical, emotional, cognitive, and social benefits of therapeutic riding are all encompassing for riders, volunteers, and family members that are involved in the specialized and meaningful programs offered at the Windsor-Essex Therapeutic Riding Association (WETRA). Therapeutic riding lessons provide individuals with disabilities and special needs the opportunity to ride horses. Lessons are taught by riding instructors certified through CanTRA, PATH International and/or OEF. Instructors adapt their teaching methods and equipment to each student. The focus of lessons is to develop riding specific skills and play mounted games, while in a safe accessible leisure setting. The goal is to have the student control or influence the horse’s movement, speed, and direction by using verbal (or adapted) cues, reins, and/or physical cues. Carriage driving is an alternative for traditional therapeutic horseback riding. Driving provides the opportunity for individuals to experience the benefits of equine-related therapy from the comfort of a carriage. Carriages can be modified to accommodate drivers’ wheelchairs, allowing the sport to be as inclusive as possible. Driving is an excellent option for those who wish to participate in horse-related activities but may be unable to mount due to physical limitations, weight, balance, fear, etc. CanTRA accredited.
