Leaving A Legacy Award Honours Ed Urquhart

Leaving A Legacy Award Honours Ed Urquhart
The inaugural recipient of the Edward Urquhart Leaving A Legacy Award is Kenny Whittmann who started playing competitive sports at the age of six.
Edward Urquhart was a man who raced motorcycles, bench-pressed 142 kg, hit golf balls 350+ yards and would take on anyone in a kayak. But most simply, he was earnestly impressed with anyone who performed to their personal best, believing that it’s the effort and dedication that counts, not a number.

With his unexpected passing in July 2021, the parasport community lost a great mentor, advocate and friend. Ed was quick to return to sports after losing both legs below the knee in a high-speed motorcycle crash on a race course. He raced motorcycles.

Athletics, sprint kayaking, powerlifting and golf levelled the playing field for him… especially kayaking. “Kayaking is special,” he said. “In a boat, I’m on a level playing field with Leaving A Legacy Award Honours Ed Urquhart able-bodied competitors and it’s something I enjoy with my sons.”

With the permission of his widow Andrea, Ed’s good friend and ParaGolf Canada founder Todd Keirstead cemented his legacy in the paragolf community with the introduction of the “Edward Urquhart Leaving A Legacy Award”. In the spirit of Ed’s character and conviction, the award recognizes someone for outstanding effort in improving their skill set, ideals of sportsmanship, dedication and significant contribution to the sport of paragolf in their community.

The inaugural recipient of the Edward Urquhart Leaving A Legacy Award is Kenny Whittmann who started playing competitive sports at the age of six, which included hockey, baseball, lacrosse and basketball. Never allowing cerebral palsy to be a deterrent, Whittmann turned to sledge hockey, wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball at age 16. After two major leg surgeries over the last eight years his sporting options became more limited, except for golf.

Using golf to normalize his life once again, Whittmann has achieved success in the sport as he consistently strives to take his game to the next level. Whittmann shares his love and passion for the game with everyone he meets – a great ambassador for the sport of paragolf in Canada.

We acknowledge the land on which ParaSport® Ontario was built is the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, the Wendat, and the Haudenosaunee peoples, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum agreement to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today Toronto (also known as Tkaronto) is home to many First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples and acknowledging reminds us that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous people.
